I'm putting a Keisler 5 speed transmission kit in my Barracuda, replacing the stock Torqueflight automatic. I bought the kit around 5 years ago. It was supposed to be a drop in (sort of) kit designed specifically for the 1963-66 Mopar A body cars. When I got the kit, I checked it out but I guess not thoroughly enough I guess. The first problem noticed was that the master cylinder was missing. I called Keisler to get a replacement and was told that due to the length of time since I'd bought the kit, I'd have to pay for the replacement. OK, from their perspective I can see how maybe they think I lost the part even though the kit has just been sitting in a box in my garage since I bought it. I swallowed hard and paid $239 for a replacement master cylinder.
The second problem was they shipped me a kit for a 1967-69 A body car, not the 1963-66 A body kit I'd ordered. At first the shop doing the work thought they could make it work by reworking the shift linkage and relpacing the rear transmission mount. Unfortunately I found out today this causes the rear of the engine to set too low in the car, which is causing some major problems:
Besides all this, I found out today that when they sent me the master cylinder, they neglected to send the correct lines. There is some qustion over whether I'll be charged for the lines. OK so I know it's been 5 years but I paid $5000 for a supposedly complete kit for my 1666 Barracuda and got an incomplete kit for a 1967-69 Barracuda. I've already paid extra money for a part they should have sent me in the first place and extra money in labor for the shop to modify an incorrect transmission that still doesn't fit the car correctly. I don't know what it would entail to make the transmission fit my car - maybe a new tail shaft - but at this point I really feel Keisler should make it good, at least from a parts standpoint. I know I'll have to eat the labor to install the correct tail shaft if that's what it takes to make it fit but If I get stuck paying for parts to correct Keislers mistake I'm going to be really pissed.
Right now I don't really have a good feeling about the whole thing. For anyone thinking about converting a Mopar with an automatic transmission to a stick, I'd recommend at least looking at other options besides Keisler. Maybe I'll change my mind depending on how bad I get screwed (or not) to make this work.
