I'm pretty stubborn. When I decided to build a 318 instead of a stroked 360, I had certain ideas I didn't want to deviate from. The biggest issue to me are the cylinder heads - I want to run heads that are optimized for 318 cubic inches. A lot of people building a 318 just throw away the stock heads and run 340/360 heads complete with 2.02" intake valves. There is nothing wrong with this approach, and a 318 with 340/360 heads can make really good power. There are a few things I don't like about this approach though. First is the idea of throwing away a perfectly good set of cylinder heads. I just can't quite wrap my mind around that. Second, the 318 bore is a little small for 2.02" intake valves. They won't hit, but the close cylinder wall shrouds them, hurting flow (I realize the tops of the bores can be notched to correct this). Finally, the bigger ports that result in higher flow number for the 340/360 heads also result in lower intake charge velocity, which can hurt low end throttle response.
In other words, I'm going to run 318 heads no matter what. The problem though is they don't flow all that well in stock form. However, with just a little work they can flow well enough to produce excellent power in a street engine. Although the referenced article advocates running a 1.78" intake valve in the 318, I disagree. I don't feel the 1.88" valve would be excessively shrouded in a 318 bore. The 1.78" is probably optimized for the 273's 3.63" bore. The 318's larger 3.91" bore gives it 0.140" of extra clearance between the valve and cylinder wall, more than enough to make up for the 1.88" valve being 0.050" closer to the wall. Also, the 318 is 16% bigger than the 273 so installing the 1.88" intake should help, not hurt the 318 (a 2.02" intake would be a different story). OK, I'm rambling...
Anyway, I want to run 318 heads with 1.88/1.60 valves. The 1.60" exhaust valves are a standard high performance part and very easy to find. The 1.88" intakes are a different story. Since most people (wrongly IMHO) just automatically run 2.02" intakes on a high performance small block, 1.88's are difficult to find. You're stuck running a stock (non-stainless) valve or paying about $25 a pop for custom Manley valves. EXCEPT..... after some Internet searching, I found a nice set of stainless steel, 1.88" intake valves at Indy Cylinder heads. These are stock sized (3/8" stem) valves that may be a little heavy for racing use, but should be perfect for my application. They have a flatter head angle than stock valves and a nice swirl polished finish on the back side. Oh, and at $73.00 for a set of 8 they are also substantially cheaper any other high performance valve I was able to find (at least for a small block Mopar).
